LFW SUMMER/RESORT’17

The most awaited fashion event of the year, Lakmé Fashion Week has been done for a month now. The last show being done and dusted on the sunny Sunday of February 5th, 2017, it’s time to have a look at some of our favourite designers. Fashion weeks are as much about the clothes as they are about the people who envision and partake in the process of this creation. The Spring Summer show at LFW was an embodiment of the essence of spring and the designs perfectly suited to the Indian tropics. So here are the designers who set the space for new trends in the fashion scene until the next season.

House of Milk: The collection by the House of Milk was breathtakingly beautiful. Founded by Reshma Merchant and Priyanka Kaul Lakdawala called their collection ‘The White Rose’. And rightly so the milky white dresses and blouses to appliqué roses on jumpsuits in silk, satin and crepes were a treat for the eyes. The healing garment collection was bespoke of their holistic approach to fashion.

Ka-Sha: Karishma Shahani’s designs for her label Ka Sha were a medley of colours. Soothing blue jackets topped over red blouses flanked by neon tassels fluttering as the models walked by were a fresh addition to the monochromatic apparels. The deep earthy tones colour bombed with bursts of neon green blouses and bright tie-dyed orange skirts and checks thrown on in good measure made for a vibrant collection.

Ekà: Rina Singh has always been unapologetic when it comes to moving away from trend based designs to those that offer functionality and has a universal appeal. Her label Ekà showcased a range of apparels designed in organic cotton fabrics to silk in light shades and natural tones sometimes with an added pop of colour which was not too bright. A perfect harmony of colours blended with florals, stripes, gingham along with light embroidery that exuded subtle drama. The collection had long summer jackets, flowy dresses, trenches, bell sleeved overwear to name a few.

Farah Sanjana: ‘Halcyon Days of Spring’ by Farah Sanjana set the mood for summer with flowy silhouettes in light colours and with a greater attention to detail. Impeccable tailoring paired with pristine white ensembles, pinafores, frilly necklines, micro skirts and bulbous ruffled hems made rightly for the summer months. Then there were tropical printed separates in yellow, green and white that speak of resort wear and tropical vacations. All we can ask for summer.

Eishita Puri: A designer who stood out for her jewellery collection was Eishita Puri for her brand Eurumme’s collection. With real leaves dipped in liquid gold to geometric accents and chunky flower motifs as well as suede made for an exquisite collection. The handcrafted delicate bracelets, neck pieces and rings inspired from nature has been designed keeping the modern woman in mind.

Label Ritu Kumar: Ritu Kumar brought back pop to the ramp at Lakmé Fashion Week with a modern twist titled ‘Maharaja Pop’. The collection boasted of the use of rich colours inspired by fabric and ornamentation of the royalty. Easy separates, tasseled tops and dresses, appliquéd bomber jackets, shorts and mini skirts to maxi dresses in bright bold accents, military inspired prints and geometric prints was a telltale of vibrancy and life with a traditional touch much suited to contemporary times.

Sanjukta Dutta: ‘Mekhela Chador’ was the collection by Sanjukta Dutta inspired by the traditional designs of Assam. The collection inspired by Goddess Durga made use of popular Assamese motifs like the Singkhap (a royal motif portraying two lions facing each other), the Kolki (a Paisley like motif), Moourah or the peacock and the Pokhila or the butterfly. Hand woven saris, lehenga cholis in addition to the traditional Mekhela in tussar and mulberry silk were the highlights of her collection.

Pero by Aneeth Arora: Péro introduced sustainable menswear for their Spring-Summer 2017 at Lakmé Fashion Week. It was inspired by the work of Danish botanist and painter, Pierre-Joseph Redouté. These pieces for men were a mix of checks and stripes in handwoven link and khadi cotton and comprised of colours like indigo, whites and pink. The collection showcased light summer separates, long coats, shorts and Manchos for their menswear line keeping in tune with the idea of the #sustainableman.

Soumodeep Dutta: Kolkata boy Soumodeep Dutta’s collection was inspired by the traditional Bengali ‘Laal Paar Sada Sari’ or the red bordered white sari. Grey, white, red and black were the main colours used. Designed in Bengal muslin- draped sarees, asymmetrical tops and dresses and long kurtas featured in this Gen Next designers fresh collection.

Divya Sheth: The ‘RaDa’ by Divya Sheth inspired by Frida Kahlo with a mix of Pichwai paintings made for an exquisite collection. From maxi dresses, flared kurtas to puffed sleeve blouses and breezy capes paired with beautiful embroideries, prints and checks were arts of work in themselves.

These designers truly made a mark at Lakmé Fashion Week, 2017. This season has been all about sustainability, using Indian textiles, reviving traditional crafts and introducing new upcoming designers. It had been quite a fulfilling five days and we hope to see much more in the seasons to come.
